Lube it up!

Lube it up!
The owner's manual cleary states that oil consumption is normal at a rate of a quart per 1000 miles.
I haven't noticed this wording in other VAG cars, but that's not to say it's not there. It is definitely clearly indicated in my RS4 owner's manual.
Regardless, what does it matter if the car uses oil? What is the big deal? I made the point about rotaries because they were designed to use oil. I can only imagine that since this car's pistons are travelling at a higher velocity than in any other production engine built, it is a UNIQUE engine and therefore we're probably dealing with the higher oil pressures and the physics of kinematic viscosity and surface tension austensibly causing more oil to pass by and get burnt in the combustion chamber. This is therefore quite acceptable to me and the fact that I have to check the oil every fill up and add some when needed doesn't cause even a modicum of concern.

Re: Lube it up!
Possibly...points well taken on the technical aspects figuring in.
The 1 qt per 1000 is in other VAG manuals, including my S4, although it is usually stated that it can reach that level under certain conditions and is considered "normal"...which I think is pure crap. The RS4 engine, as you describe here, could be a different case. Jury's still out...

Re higher RPM engine...
I owned 3 sportbikes: 86 Honda VFR 750, 89 Suzuki GSXR 750, and 93 Honda CBR 900RR with redlines of 11,500 to 13,000, and they did not use oil. And I was up near redline all the time. So, so much for the higher RPM causing oil consumption in a piston engine theory.

Re: I have wondered along the same lines, but are the piston speeds in those
Why wouldn't they be? They're smaller and lighter.
If Audi is using a special material in the rings and/or cyl walls(although what that could be, I don't know), then maybe that might account for oil blowing by. Or maybe the valves seal/seat design. There's also the emissions crankcase ventilation system, which I wouldn't totally rule out.
Who knows at this point? Hopefully it is isolated and it is relative to the first few thousand miles, but don't hold your breath on that one.

Previous Audi engines(B6/B7 S4s ) piston walls are made of Alusil

1 qt/1000 km has always been the VAG criteria for maximum "normal" oil consumption.
Most VAG motors in actuality are closer to 10,000-15,000 miles per quart in real world use.

Fastest mean velocity....
The B7 RS4's engine at 8250 RPM has an average piston speed of 25.52 meters per second. This is faster than ANY current production automobile engine out there and on par with Formula 1 race engines. Current technology does not allow a reliable piston speed faster than this.

https://www.audiworld.com/news/06/turbos/content.shtml</a
