Default well it is faster. but the RS4 is more fun...

the only time the RS4 has the advantage is from the line when it gets the jump thanks to the awd launch. But after that, the M5 reels it in and just gains even more ground. By the time you're in triple digits, the M5 gets a few more car lengths. It even feels that way from the butt dyno. The M5 simply has some crazy insanely strong top end. Once you overcome the weight and get momentum, nothing short of a supercar can touch it. The RS4 is more well-rounded: its speed seems more usable in that you don't have to go into triple digits to appreciate its best traits.

That said, I got pwned by an M5 today... then again, I wasn't trying too hard and he also got the jump... but even if I did try, I doubt the result would've much different. So what, my car looks better

Default that's a Hartge M5 vs. a stock RS4.

of course it's faster. it's also $50K more expensive, at least.

Thanks, but we all know the M5 is faster. It better be for that price.

Default If that is true, then someone explain these 'Ring times..

According to this post on RS6, and taking it with some salt, it was said taht a pro DTM driver took the RS4 around the 'Ring in less time than the M5 made it around, and if you accounted for the non-stock tires, then the RS4 would be nearly tied around the 'Ring.

So how does this square with the heretofore established belief (which I even subscribe to) that the M5 is faster?

Default personally, from the driver's seat, I prefer the sound of the RS4.... but I know what dxben means...

the M5 sounds much better at high rpm's near redline because it has that hollow-sounding exotic wail that only a finely tuned V10/V12 can make. From idle however and driven under normal conditions (under 6k rpm's) the RS4 makes better music. The idle in the M5 is unremarkable and when it's cold, it just plain sounds like ****. The RS4 sounds mean at idle like it's ready to pounce and low rpm puttering about town makes people's heads turn to see what's making the noise. Classic V8 rumble. You have to rev it to 7k to get the same reaction in the M5.

Default Exactly...

I don't really drive my car over 90mph... Which is why the speed advantage of the M5 means bubkis to me..

And as larry said, the sound of the RS4 is much more impressive around town, which is where I like to cruise now with my S4..

Even TopGear's Jeremy Clarkson remarked at how unimpressive the M5 sound was.. until it gets all the way up the rev count.
