More initial thoughts, and pictures of a train
Thanks to the weather and my not ordering winter tires, I've put just over 300 miles on the car since it arrived on 9 February, but they have been 300 miles of bliss. I'm still a performance car n00b (my first car out of college was my TT; I drove a couple of Accents while I was in college), but this car has surpassed my expectations. It may not be the fastest car around; I knew that going in. It is damn fast, however, and that power, combined with the sound, the looks, the interior, the accessories--I'm so far exquisitely happy with the car (although I'm not so happy with my ability to consistenly perform 1-2 shifts smoothly).
I think it's a natural thing for people to compare other fast cars (and whatnot) with this one; at least until the new M3 comes out the RS 4 is the proverbial top dog in its niche. It's no surprise that various modified cars are faster, and I find these comparisons interesting. You can make anything fast (see various turbo minivans for example), but not everything comes that way out of the box. I think it's nice to have the current measuring stick as to what "fast" is. If someone can mod a car or buy a car that's faster than the RS 4, good job, as that is impressively fast. Do these cars make me insecure in my purchase? Simply no way.
Anyway, I just gave it its first Zaino treatment today, so I thought to take some pictures while it was still shiny.

You summed it up perfectly......
It is the TOTAL PACKAGE, both objective and subjective, and the fact that it comes that way from the factory that makes the RS4 so impressive.
I've been saying for months that you can mod almost anything to be faster than anything else. That just isn't the point. If I could afford it (which I hope to some day), I would have bought an Aston Martin Vantage Roadster. Does anyone think the owners of that car care that a modded Mitsubishi Evo is faster? There is a certain style, class, panache, elegance, exclusivity that goes with the RS4 along with it's phenomenal performance. But make no mistake....it is a maximum level luxury performance sedan, not a pure sports car. If you want a pure sports car, for $75k, there are plenty of other choices, so don't just compare this vehicle solely on sports car parameters. And here's food for thought.....there is no single new vehicle that does everything better than, or has all the features of the RS4 that costs less.
Your pic in front of the train is one of the best RS4 shots I have ever seen. Great Lighting. Very artisitic!!!!

Hey thanks. :)
Funny story:
While I was taking those pictures, a guy in a black '05 A6 pulled up and complimented the car's looks. He asked if I installed the wheels, and I replied that they were stock.
"What are they, 17s?"
Hey also said that he had been researching either a Mercedes or Audi's "A7" SUV to replace his current car, and hadn't seen any info on the RS 4 on the internet.
"What's it have in it, a 1.8?"
Nice guy, and I really appreciated the interest and compliments, but he apparently needs to work on his google-fu.
