Love my quads.....

I think they look sportier, and unlike many other cars, on the RS4, quad tips with a valved exhaust are actually functional. The ovals look good too but it is nothing unique. Assorted Benzes, the Acura RL, even the Hyundai Sonata have oval exhaust tips. In contrast, there is presently no other RS4 on the planet that has these exhaust tips on them!!!!

This is a perfect example of how something initially purposeful just went too far....
The only real benefit of large wheels is to clear large brake calipers. Since it was the very high performance cars that had these large calipers, large wheels became associated with high performance. Pretty soon, however, the wheels became some sort of pseudo status symbol of performance on their own, even on cars with puny brakes. As such, they became trendy, but rice nonetheless.
Now, reduced tire sidewall height (that accompanies larger wheels) does have performance benefits but there is probably no real increased benefit to handling once you get down to a 45 aspect ratio.
The downside of larger wheels is heavier weight, especially if the wheel design is such that much of the wheel mass is towards the rim end of the wheel vs. the hub. Also, a tire with too little sidewall kills your ride, offers little wheel protection, and can actually adversely affect handling due to an inability to properly dissipate shear forces when a car rapidly changes direction.
The best wheel for the RS4 would actually be an 18x9.5" wheel with 275/35/18 tires. How many race cars due you see with huge rims? None. The are big enough to clear the brakes and that's it.
