New M3 driven
doesn't appear to have the torque of the RS4.

http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/first_drive.php?sid=841&page=1</a

I'm sure Car & Driver can "fix" this car when it arrives here.
Let's put that through the Car and Driver translater shall we?
Beep, bleep, blup, bleep.... Ernn, bleep!
And out comes:
"BMW has done it again!"
By the way, 3,648 lbs ? That is not exactly svelte.
Some other interesting quotes:
"turn-in still feels a bit dumbed down and numb"
"...less focused handling..."
"The new car needs to be a brilliant all-round package, capable of pleasing those who like the idea of the badge more than what it first stood for: track-honed thrills."
"...in trying to hit so many targets, the E92 leaves purists wanting."
"...but it takes a little more determination to get it there in the first place thanks to that softer, woollier front end."
But hey, there's always the CSL!
"...the CSL sounds like a dead cert. We'd bet on it arriving in 2010."
Oh wow, that soon? LOL.

If this is true
than it is very interesting that BMW has cosen to go down this route and present a less focus product, which is the RS4 always have been. It is interesting that the C63, RS4 and M3 now seems to be bunching up in terms of characteristics.
I also thought that people who buy the 3 cars and different, now I am not so sure....

No. I didn't mean that at all
To me the RS4 is the ultimate road car. It is fast enough, handles great and you can really use it as an everyday car. The M3 on the other hand, has always have that boy racer image (ok, a rich boy racer). In the review they were saying this version is softer than before so I am thinking that BMW is trying to be an everyday car too, instead of being one that puts handling above all. The RS4 is great 99% of the time on public road. I haven't driven it on the track yet (although I did ride in one with a professional driver).
In the past, people who buy AMG cars are more for the straight line thrill. M3 buyers are younger and more racy, whereas the RS buyers are more subtle and in general, less showy. However, it seems that all 3 cars are very close in character now so it will be interesting to say the least

i think it's
just improving on what was admittedly a harsh ride in the M3. i wouldn't read more into it than that, other than they have refined it to keep up with the times and competition.
as for these cars becoming more like(or grouped) in characteristics, i believe you are correct in that assumption. one glaring example is the V8 now being used by BMW in the new M3. it would have been BMW 'heresy' just a few years ago.
