new RS4; oil consumption at 500 miles
have been reading some of the oil consumption posts and just yesterday had to drop by the local dealership for something unrelated. before leaving, the service manager asks "have you checked your oil yet? we're trying to monitor/chart oil consumption on these cars....we'd love it if you could take down some readings here in the early goings....."
so home i went. let the car cool for a few hours....low and behold? MIN. double checked that i had wiped the dipstick clean and sure enough another MIN. i was absolutely shocked as the car has less than 500 miles on it. went straight to the auto supply store to purchase some more Castrol SynTec for the time being.
funny part about it was when my wife asked me why i was adding more oil to my brand new car. i answered with "hun, this thing was built by Quattro GmbH, that's why."

Normal. It will most likely drop to near zero after your 1st oil change
The cylinder walls on this engine are polished glass. It takes a while to lap the rings in and get a good ring/cylinder seal.

2nd - this is not normal for most engines but the RS engine is different
and actually more typical of the way engines were in the past.
There should be some warning the dealers give to new buyers - just so they don't freak if they are not readers of AW

RI RS4 - assuming your current oil experiment yields positve results -
and you find the oil you're currently testing stands up to fuel dilution etc.; Do you expect to change the oil any less frequently than you have? I know that sounds intuitive, but after changing mine at 600 and 1900 miles, i believe one way to alleviate concern over running deteriorated oil in our engines is just to change it more frequently. No doubt it would still be great to find an oil that does hold up...

if they gave you a form to monitor oil consumption
than they have it officially on an oil consumption program, as VAG has done on some other cars. car to car to car will be different. but there's probably a reason they are doing this.

agree
a notation on the car or even in the owners manual about checking(and expecting) initial oil consumption would be a good thing for this car. if i saw my 70k performance sedan at min oil level after a month, i would be very upset, unless i knew for certain that it was to normal...and temporary.

Right now I'm at 3K and am not changing it.
That is the longest I've allowed oil to go so far. I'll be monitoring it with samples to watch it's progress, and Terry Dyson will use this information to fine tune the formulation and additive package.
