Default Porsche to use DSG-7

Wonder if we'll see it before the B8.

Default Will Porsche force it on their customers who still want a manual like Audi does?

I would never buy an S6/RS6/S8 due to no manual available. An Audi S/RS car with only DSG available? I don't care if it shifts faster than freaking superman I want to have *FUN* and that means a manual transmission.

Default I hear ya

I doubt Porsche will force it.

The S6/S8 technically have Tiptronic 6-speed...an automatic with manual override. We could only wish they could at least have DSG (S Tronic).

DSG/SMG are more manual than automatic. True semi-automatics. You can still shift it yourself, just no clutch pedal. The pay off is supposed to be better acceleration due to faster shifting.

But a lot of people have to have the H pattern and a clutch pedal. I still think I fall into that camp.

That'd be pretty sweet. S8 is kinda a weird car though. RS6 without available manual is a travesty.

Default well what sucks about a DSG in a turbocharged car like the 997TT is...

it will severely limit your ability to mod the car even in a conservative fashion such as simply chipping. The DSG will likely not be able to handle much more torque than what the 997 is already producing (500+ ft lbs). And with the VTG system in place, the 997TT is just yearning to produce much more torque and power with just a chip.

But I guess there are people who will buy 997TT's and leave them stock because they're fast enough

Doesn't the Bugatti Veyron use a DSG?

Default but audis and pcars will not get the same unit

I'm sure the veyron's tranny was engineered exclusively for the veyron and the veyron alone to handle the 1000hp and immense torque that car can put down. And I'm sure that tranny is a very heavy unit and accounts for a healthy portion of the veyron's $1M price tag.

The pcars and audis are more likely to share parts and the DSG7 will probably be able to handle oem spec torque across the model lineups whereby the 997TT and the R8's V10 will be on the upper limits of what the tranny can handle. GT1 race cars with the DSG will be fine because although it will be a high revving unit with lots more power, the torque figures will not be much more than the current 997TT's.

at least that's what I think.

Default Well yes you may be right. I guess my main point was that they could

engineer a version of the DSG to comply with specific requirements of each car. The Veyron is one extreme case of course.
