Default Pre air filter (snow filter)

So I just took mine out again and it was pretty dirty only after about 2k miles. I am sure the so cal fires didn't help.

I was thinking about just leaving this small filter out. Has anyone every done this?

Thanks,

Matt

Default That amount of debris has to impede air flow...

I use to clean my filter every 2 months on my A4. Haven't done it yet on my new S4.

my guess is that most debris is coming in from the small side air tube that pulls air from the fender/wheel well area. where a lot of stuff is kicked up by the tires. bad location for an air pickup, IMO. and maybe a screen there would be useful, instead of allowing that junk to wind up at main air feed(snow screen at top of airbox).

Default Has anyone in a non-snow area just removed the snow filter?..

I mean isn't filtering what the air filter is for?

Default umm, sorry but that's wrong

If you look at the diagram the snow filter only gets air and debris from the grill opening.
It sits inside the main air snorkel before the airbox.
The fender opening is in the actual airbox.

Default you're right

the side tube enters the airbox below the snorkel. my mistake.

i'm wondering how all the debris gets in there at all. it piles up in the screen quick, just a few thousand miles. if not for the screen, all that junk would be on the filter.

i've never had anywhere near that amount of debris in the airbox or on the filter in my many other cars over the years.

I removed mine on my b7 avant and my rs4. you do not need it, only restricts the air flow.
