PSA: keep ye eyes on the dipstick!
I checked the oil again today (after shutting down and waiting about an hour), and it was AT the 'low' line (just under 1000 miles on the odometer). Added about 3/4 qt of Mobil 1 5W/30, which is kosher per the manual (and it was all I had in the garage). I guess there must be a lot of blow-by loss during the break-in period, especially with the higher revs. No matter, it's FUN! I had a little run-in with some kids in an Olds 442 today....quickly put them in my rearview mirror and kept them there. All in good fun, thumbs up all around.
I wonder why Audi can't implement a 'dipstick-less' engine, like in my 750i. All I do to check the oil in that car is use iDrive to go to 'car data' and check the oil level. It can be done while driving! Audi already has TPMS, why can't they get rid of the dipstick?

yeah I like dip-stick-less cars...
makes it so much easier. In fact, the M5 consumes so much oil (about .5L per 1000 miles) that BMW decided to put an oil-level indicator that can be toggled right on the driver info display next to the tach as well as on iDrive. As it turns out, this was brilliant of BMW to make oil-level check so accessible (w/o even going through iDrive) since this particular car consumes so much of it that checking it has become such a regular regimen! I don't mind having to add oil so much since it seems to be par for course with high-revving performance engines but it still sucks that the Castrol TWS Motorsport 10W60 that this engine requires costs $17/quart :/ For the record, the oil consumption seems to have all but gone away after I've logged on 8k miles on it. Hopefully, the RS4 will also follow a similar pattern, although my car doesn't seem to have consumed much oil at all. I'm still at middle of the dipstick after over 1500 miles, granted I never did check what level I was in when I took delivery.

new version of iDrive on all the '06 models seems to be a big improvement over previous versions...
in fact, the navigation destination entry scheme seems to be more user-friendly and faster than the current MMI in the RS4. I'm still not a fan of iDrive but in my opinion, Audi's MMI isn't all that much better and in some instances it is worse. I'll take Honda/Acura's touchscreen interface over both any day. That system is brilliant.
