purchase RS4 issues
 

I am ready to pull the trigger on a used '07 RS4 69k miles. I have had an Audi S4 2001 as a new car, never any problems. Now I am considering a 9 year old car. I would appreciate your collective candor and advice. Would love to be back in the "Audi 4 club:"

1. what problems are common for these cars?
2. Does the RS4 engine have the same timing chain pully and tensioner problems as reported for the S4?

I wouldn't call the DRC a problem area after the recall has been done. But it is expensive to fix. Control arms tend to wear out pretty quick. Brakes last a long time with the right pads and gentle use, but when they go, they're expensive too. Carbon cleaning doesn't need to be done regularly, but if you want the maximum power that you paid for, it should be done every 15K miles or so. Most guys find these cars very reliable.

The timing chain and tensioner on the RS4 motor is pretty much bullet-proof, as is the entire motor.

69,000 mile red RS4. Would have been nice...

I also was an original owner of a 2001 S4 and sold it after 10 year of ownership to buy a 2008 RS4 with 6K miles. My RS4 now has 53K miles. The car has been fairly reliable. Here are things I had done to the car other than oil change every 5K miles:
1. Front pads and rotors - about $2K
2. Front control arms - about $1500 - Went with 034 Motorsports setup
3. Spark plugs at 35K - $400

No issues with the DRC system (previous owner had recall performed). No obvious power lost without carbon cleaning.
+1 on the timing chain and tensioner

You won"t regret owning a B7 RS4!
