Question about climate control and service check
I have to bring the RS4 in for a regular service check soon. The only issue I have to report is I find the climate control to be not accurate. That is, in my old 2000 S4, I would set it to 20 degC, auto, and the temp would be perfect, very stable. But in the RS4, I find somedays 21 is too cold, some days 19 is too hot. 20 degC seems it can be all over the place, probably +-2 or 3 deg... I would guess the temp sensor is inaccurate or broken?
Anyone else experience this or know if this sounds like a bad temp sensor? And how do I convince the dealer to fix it?
Finally, is there anything I should explicitly mention to the dealer to check in general?

you can try a couple things...
if you haven't already done this, try turning on by not using "Auto" button(this will also keep fan from blasting at beginning). so, you can have your temp set and then just hit the "panel" or "floor' button to activate AC...and then adjust fan speed.
also, use "recirc" to get max cold air...with temp set all the way to "Lo" instead of a number.
the problem with auto climate control systems is that they are trying to maintain a temp, so it's hard to get real hot or cold air. example: if you are hot, but it's only 75 degrees inside your car, it won't necessarily put out real cold air, but instead will put out air temp which attempts to match the temp in the car.

i should clarify something...
regarding auto climate controls trying to "maintain" a temp inside the car... let's say it's 75 inside the car. but you want cold air. if your temp setting is at 68(for example), it won't put out very cold air, as it's only trying to get from 75 to 68.
it's best to set at "Lo" temp setting to get truly cold air...and use "recirc" feature, so that you aren't sucking in warm outside air which the compressor then has to work harder in order to cool.

Goodluck. I've had the same complaint about my B6 S4.
I asked the dealer to check it out when I was at service and they said it was operating to spec. Outside air temp seems to matter. If it's hot out, and I set it to 72, cold air will come out. If it's cold out, and I set it to 72, warm air will come out.
I agree with you though. Sometimes I have to set it to 75 because 72 is freezing me out and sometimes I set it to 68, or 69 because 72 is too warm. My friend's GTI seems to do much better at getting the right temperature. I think I'm going to buy a thermometer and keep it in the car and set it to 72 and see if it ever gets to 72.
