Default Questions on carbon build-up on RS4's

Hey everyone. I'm just curious to see how many RS4 owners have done carbon cleaning and if it is mandatory. I haven't had a cleaning yet, but I have read that most have. I currently have a little over 36,000 miles on it and have brought it in/changed my own oil every service interval.

Also, does anyone know of any good places to clean the carbon in the New Jersey area? Thanks!

I suspect from the postings here carbon cleaning will be good. I probably need it with my 27k miles.

If you don't get a response here - post in the local NJ forum here or on the other Audi forums for recommendations for a shop

It isn't required, but you'll get misfires, loss of power, and a poorly running engine if it isn't addressed.
WE've seen cars come through with around 45k on them, and the buildup is disgusting.

Um, well here's what mine looked like at 33,000 miles. Oh, and it makes NO difference how often you change your oil or how hard you drive it. I've seen several experienced mechanics post "drive it like you stole it". That works great for carburetor and port-injected motors, but does little good for our direct-injected motor. And don't waste your time and money on liquid elixirs. You have to crack it open and get your hands dirty (and your face, arms, engine compartment, rags, tools, floor, safety glasses, hat).

Strongly second the referral to Elite. Took my car there from Boston at just under 50k miles via the ferry. Kai and team did a great job. You will feel it running much smoother even if you didn't have severe hiccups before. It pulls more steadily through the revs and idles better at start.

My wife (not a car girl) even commented shortly after "I don't know what you did to the car but it runs much better now." High praise indeed!

I had mine done at 41K miles. I vouch for Pure Motorsports for anyone in the SoCal area. Michael and the crew there know there stuff and do an excellent job.

I've cleaned carbon on a RS4 as early as 20k miles and it wasn't the worst buildup I have seen but it definitely affected performance.

Three times in under 50K miles. Anybody who claims that it's not needed hasn't done it.
