Default Quick question on oil standards for you folks...

What is the official VAG oil standard for the RS4?

Is it 502.00 or 505.00 or 503.01?

TIA

Default 502.00 in the US, 504 in Europe (edited)

In the US it's 502.00, 5W40, 0W40 and 5W30 oils

In Europe it's 504, low sulfer 5W30 oil.

here are the latest two 502.00 lists

Default Last question on oil...........RI RS4

Which is better, Elf LDX 5-40, Motul 8100 E tech 0-40 for the RS4. I understand you have data on these oils. My local mechanic prefers Elf LDX.
TIA

Default Motul is a full ester based oil, Elf is a Syn blend.

Esters are a polar molecule, which means that they have a charge and are attracted to metal. Motul will "stick" better for cold weather starting, and will protect the engine better against fuel dilution. But, if you change Elf every 3K until you reach 10K miles and then every 5K thereafter, you won't see a big difference.

Default lv42dy, please see your original post. I found someone in the Ottawa region with Motul.

Default More important Motul oil info, please read...

The Motul 8100 E-TECH SAE 0W40 (Ester) 100% Synthetic oil. The E-TECH 0W40 as approvals from VAG for the following norms/standards; VW 502.00, 505.00 and the 503.01.

It also meets the Porsche and MB 229.3 norms.

This oil can be used in both gas and diesel powered cars.

To my surprise there are two additional 8100s available...

The next one in list is the:

Motul 8100 X-cess SAE 5W40 (Ester) 100% Synthetic oil available. The X-cess 5W40 as approvals from VAG for the following norms/standards; VW 502.00, 505.00 only. It is not approved for the VAG 503.01 norm.

It also meets the Porsche norm, the MB 229.3 norm, the BMW "Long Life-98" norm and Opel/GM Diesel LL B-025 norm.

This oil can be used in both gas and diesel powered cars.

Finally there is the Motul 8100 Eco-nergy 5W30 (Ester) 100% synthetic oil. This oil is not approved nor does it meet any of the VAG standards.

NOTE: Personally I've always used the 8100 E-TECH 0W40 because it was approved for the more stringent VW 503.01 norm (and the fact I did not know a 5W40 was available). This norm (503.01) is the one for the extended oil change intervals so the oil as to perform a lot better over a longer time period. The problem is I heard rumours that Motul may discontinue the E-TECH 0W40 all together and just keep the 5W40 available. That would suck. I'm waiting for a phone call from Motul Canada to confirm this rumour.

In the mean time here are two vital specs on these oils you might want to look at...

E-TECH 0W40

Flash point = 226 C or 438 F
Pouring point = -60 C or -76 F (that's fricken cold).

X-cess 5W40

Flash point = 228 C or 442 F
Pouring point = -39 C or -38 F

Default That would suck. X-cess is a Syn blend, and doesn't have the ester composition of E-tech

Most of the oil companies are really gearing up for the 504 spec, 5W30 low SAPS oils for Europe and eventually the states, whereas the US oriented oil companies are gearing up for 0W-20, high fuel mileage oils.

For an Audi 502 approved oil, I think E-tech 0W-40 is about the best, which is why I currently use it and recommend it. But, there are better oils out there that are not approved. I'll keep you all informed as I do my next set of oil testing.

According to Motul's own web site the X-cess is 100% synthetic Ester based oil.
