Default Recording engine sounds for a virtual RS4! :D

Hello there lucky RS4 owners :P I'm a 3D artist, in serious need for as much sound recordings of the RS4 engine as possible, for a car sim called 'Racer' (www.racer.nl), heres our model, still work in progress ofcourse, but soon it'll have some brilliant textures on it! Anyway, if you apply to this favor please record RPM samples in the following order: A (for accelerate) 1000K,2K,3K and so on, then D (for deccelerat) 1K,2,3..etc'. And one more sample when the engine is idle. God bless ya if you can do this!

Well, nothing. :[ This car sim is a free project which makes up it's content from people's freetime hobbies of making cars & tracks. Its a veteran sim tho, already coming at the age of seven soon, so we got tons of cars so far, for instance the new M5 E60 which handles very similiar to the real thing, I swear to god even tho I've never got to drive the real thing. We also got the BMW M3 E46 which is the outcome of 2 years of development by one guy, it actually went so far it reached the hands of a BMW engineer afaik. This is good stuff, and even tho its virutal, its still great fun roaming wherever you want, especially when making multiplayer sessions which are fun to drag test cars or just race on the various tracks available. Aside this RS4 we have more, unreleased projects going, such as the pic below of an 2004 Audi S4 on the famous Nurburgring! Btw when I say "We" I mean the Racer community folks sitting @ RaceSimCentral.

Default Looks really good, some thoughts..

Might be able to help with the sound clips, I have a few very good MiniDisc recorders sitting arounding doing nothing, however I have no mic at the moment to plug into it.

As far as the sim goes, it looks good from the pics you've shown. Is the source available?

Some suggestions, I think one of the biggest detractors from realism in sims is surrounding environments. It looks from the screenshots above that you are using billboards or point sprites for the trees. I'm not a fan of this technique unless you are trying to render particle systems.

I know your team is probably full steam on the car's physics and doesn't care about peripheral image quality, but I would consider using a random instancing system and plugging in some tree meshes with high quality texs for branches. If you're worried about polly count on wide or eagle eyed views, run the trees though a LOD system - athough it can be tricky to implement properly (i.e., no draw-in which looks terrible, circa 1983's Outrun).

The other thing I'd change is to beef up the poly count on the car. I bet as an open source project with multi OS targets you are being conservative with GPU performance targets, but I say what's the point? The memory buses and VRAM speeds are so beastly these days that even a 2 year old car can effortlessly render that RS4 model with an additional 10k polys.

I think (again) that the closer you get towards sims, the quicker small errors in detail can degrade overall immersion.

That's why games with cartoony themes can actually be far more immersive.

And oh, I have not run the binaries yet, so I have no idea if you've addressed any of these suggestions. I would also say that you should add heat wave effects on the surface of the road. If you need a hand with that I can definitely help you. It's not that hard to render using pixel shaders.

I can give you a hand with LOD as well, but its a much more involved problem.

Hmm lemme sort this for ya, this sim is made by Ruud Van Gaal, a dutch guy. Unfortunately its pretty rarely being updated lately. All these issues you've brought up are known and everything needs care, both cars and tracks.
Thing is, a car project is much more "easier" than a track project for most people, therefore you don't see many quality tracks, but there're a few to enjoy both qualities, especially this Nurburgring track thats in dev, and still has much room for improvements, aswell as what you pointed out.
My "job" concentrates on helping modelers who wants to put their cars/track in-game, while helping improving it on the visual side mostly, we got a shader system thats a bit dated but still with a little effort can make amazing looking shots. I went to this forum cause I like this car in particular and getting it to sound properly would be a rather big achievement.

Default That's at least the third inquiry gone unanswered. Maybe legal council put the muzzle on...

After all that holy stink we deserve an update!
