RS4 break in...
so with RS4s hopefully arriving soon, how are you guys thinking of breaking it in. I am thinking:
stay under 3k for the first 3k miles
add an additional 1k for every 1k miles.
Any ideas?

so you won't experience redline until 8.5k miles?
ummm... no.
either follow what the manual tells you to do, or stfa for the "drive it like you stole it" method.
personally, think a full-load break-in (not full rev, but full load) is the best way to seat the rings.
stfa in B6 and B7 and you'll find a lot of discussion about break-in, power output, and oil consumption.

I def checked out some of the B6/B7 forums for breakin, but this is a different engine.
I was figuring once upto like 6k, it would be ok to go full out bat out of hell driving. Id be very patient with it to make sure it seats right.

the basic principles are still the same
you need some breif high load time to seat the rings, otherwise keep the revs cool for a little while.
personally, i'd use a hybrid method. make the first 50 miles full of high load - low rpm driving, then then follow the owners manual after that.

I'd do what the manual says, nothing more. Usually high-revving engines require a bit more break-in
But your proposed method is ridiculously over-cautious. If you go by that, you wouldn't be enjoying redline until almost 9000 miles. I don't even keep most cars long enough to get that kind of mileage so I'll be damned if I wait that long.
My guess is that the Audi RS4 owner's manual will dictate a 2 step break-in period between 1500-2200 miles to complete. By comparison, the similarly high-revving E60 M5/E63 M6 V10's require a 5k rpm limit before 1200 miles with no full-throttle and no sustained speeds over 130 mph before 3100 miles. I doubt the Audi RS4's procedure will be much different.

You'll get 1 chance to fvck up this engine and many will. Go with Motoman's method
OR the complaining about oil consuption problems will continue. If you wait any longer than 100 miles to start doing WOTS you probably will be sorry. BUT oil is cheap. Also, I would drain out the synthetic oil and save it. Put in an audi approved convetional oil to run for the first 1000 miles. Then put the synthetic back in. Synthetic oils are not condusive to engine break in. Break in REQUIREs some wear. BUT after all it is your car and you need to do what you think is right, but you will live with the consequences. You make the call for yourself.

Motomans break in theory

You have learned an important lesson, Grasshopper!
Just because it is in the manual, does not make it true.( I just deleted my own reference to a religious manuscript in order not to offend any one.)

The priciple is to get the rings to seat QUICKLY, Not slowly.
If you baby this car until 6k, I will guarentee you one thing for sure. You will have one of the SL:OWEST Rs4s on the road. And probably burn oil.
