Default No. M1 5w-30 is not going to meet warranty specs. Your manual states the oil must meet VW502...

and that oil doesnt in its US formulation. 0w-40 does.

Actually, both 0W-40 or 5W-40 work

M1 5w-40 in the US is only their diesel oil. Their euro 5w-40 works, bot not available here.

Default No, it needs to meet both viscosity requirements and vw502...

So you can use any oil that is a 5w-40, 0w-40, or 5w-30 AND meets vw502.

This includes Castrol 5w-40, M1 0w-40, Valvoline 5w-40, Motul 5w-40 and 0w-40, and others but those are some popular ones where the US formulations meet both requirements.

Has Mobil 1 gone to hydrocracked yet, or still all PAO based? Do you happen to know?

Reading their website they now call it "high performance fluids", I believe...whatever that means?! And they tend to skirt around the question of whether it's truly a 100% synthetic. My feeling(or suspicion) is that it would be hard to resist the temptation to go to group 3, like Castrol, Valvoline, and others are doing.

Time to take another look at Amsoil? LOL.

Default Hard to say with 100% certainty. They havent admitted it but the M1 0w-40 remains the same...

from what I can see. It hasnt changed specs. I heard some of the others have slightly changed but I dont think anyone can say 100% how. Just guess.

The M1 0w-40 retains the same HT/HS of 3.6 it has always had and retains vw502 and 503.1 as well as MB 229.5 LL approvals.

The 15w-50 used to have a HT/HS of 5.1 but it has now been dropped to 4.6. Not sure why.
