RS4 Pace Car
I was able to add some miles to my car this week (now up to 810) so I took the RS4 over to Infineon this weekend for the Formula Russell Championship. During the lunch break before the races began we were able to drive on the track for a short while. Since I couldn't go over 7K rpm I didn't really test the car in the corners but I was able to push it nonethelesss.
The motor shows great torque and does move the 4000lb beast quite well even with me taking it relatively easy. I took it down the dragstrip once hitting 130 mph at about 1/2 to 3/4 mile down the strip (again never going over 7K rpm). So I can't wait to take it up to 8.5K to really see the motor hitting it's stride.
Suspension! Well it is a good street suspension. If I decide to track the car regularly I would definitely upgrade to the Ohlins from Stasis. Hell, I may do it anyway. In the esses at Infineon (turns 8 & 8A) there is no way the DRC can keep the car flat. It was rockin and rollin side to side. It did OK with the other turns but if I were really getting on the throttle it would probably do the same thing. Otherwise the car was very predictable, fairly neutral at the speeds I was going, and easy to drive through the course. No torque steer! This was echoed by a couple of the Pro drivers who then took the car out as a pace car (one owns a A4 2.0T who grinned and then said he wants one).
Brakes: They did fine for the speeds I reached on street tires and keeping below 7K rpm. Anymore and they will be tested seriously. Definitely need to find some different pads. I can see where the Alcons would really help. If you put the Ohlins on plus R compound tires I would think a brake upgrade would be mandatory for the track. For the street they work fine plus an occasional track excursion.
It was funny with a Pro driver in the RS4 moving around the track with 15 Formula Mazdas trailing. The RS4 was moving while we all were scrubbing tires lazily circling the track before the start. The sensation of speed in the RS4 and in the Formula car is very different.
I had a great time and picked up a podium finish with a 3rd place in the B Group Saturday turning 1:44 laps (full course with the turn 7 Buttonhook)quite consistently.
