RS4 reliability
hi everyone,
i visit quite a bit of forums. i'm basically a car addict. love cars. i owned an 03 M5 so i still visit the M5board. from time to time their are comparisons between the new M5 and the current RS4. in my mind that is a complement. especially since the RS4 costs so much less and has 80 less hp. in one comparison i feel the RS4 always wins is in reliability. the new M5's are just a complete mess. bmw has designed an overly complex automobile. vanos line failures, smg failures, transmission failures etc. on the other hand the RS4's seem to be designed and assembled much better. this has got to be good news for Audi and especially to RS4 drivers/owners.
in a related thought....i just recently purchased an S4. a lot of the current posters/owners feel as though bmw has stepped over the current S4 with the 335i coupe. it seems many have forgotten about how bmw's M3 engines were melting down. only time will tell if the new twin turbo engine will prove to be as reliable as the 4.2 V8.

there are rumors that the 335 has been shutting down, and early, due to heat...
...but as with all rumors, take it with a grain of salt. too early.
as for M5, larryV has both an RS4 and M5. problems with neither that i recall. not statistical, but good guy to talk to.
as for the RS4, depends on who you talk to, but so far the ****-talkers aren't people who own the car, and often have never driven one. i'd say the overall experience with the RS4, from owners, has been inline wiht what you've said. and you know damn well that forums are where people come to post problems. a few guys have had a clutch issue that was remedied in most if not all cases (vacuum hose). but i'm at 5K miles (2K-ish being assertive, twisty driving) and not one single issue or concern yet.
*looks around, knocks on own wood*

There are quite a few first drive tests around and none have mentioned this.
I wouldn't want to start spreading "urban legends" around. It doesn't feel that great when I hear similar bull about our cars.
