Snow tires- 225's vs 255s
OK, so the 225's will grip better in the snow and the 255's will look cooler- what is everyone getting?
Will the 225's fit properly on an 8 1/2 inch rim? Or is the rim wider than the tire which will lead to rim rash on the curbs....

Traction > Looks
I went for the 225s. I deal with more than my fair share of deep snow and ice and the narrower 225 will be better for that. The rims I bought are 7.5" wide, but you could probably put them on a 8.5" rim (seeing as how 225mm is 8.858".) It'll probably stretch the sidewalls somewhat and increase your chance of curb rash though.

Sucker for looks
Don't have the car yet, but I will go with the 255s. It doesn't snow that much in New York area and besides I think 4 wheel drive and a good set of snows will be good enough to tackle most harsh terrains. However, if you go skiing every weekend in mountainous areas, the 225 will probably be better.

255's (Looks > Traction)
As you alluded, for optimal traction you should use 18" wheels with 225 or 235 width tires.

Here's my set-up with photos.

225s on 18" heavy wheels are best. 17's would be better but forgettabout w/ 8-pot Brembos.
You'll want a skinnier tire with lots of sidewall for maximum snow/ice performance. Trust me, I ski 5 days out of seven, and have owned sets of dedicated winter wheels/studless snow tires on my seven most recent vehicles. The only problem is you'll get really frustrated with everyone else poking along so slowly. Last year I travelled 200 miles to a ski race in Northern Michigan early in the morning after a big snow storm. Only the right lane was plowed much of the way and traffic was moving about 50 mph. I navigated 6-8" of snow in the left lane much of the way going 70 safely and effortlessly. This is what good tires, AWD, traction control, stability control and anti-lock brakes can do for you. Of course other drivers are absolutely clueless (and jealous) of what's possible with good equipment and don't like it!
Oh, and drag races! I drag race almost every stop light in the winter. It's actually a traction race and only up to posted speeds, but it's a blast! I don't recall every getting beat. Those guys in SUV's and 4WD trucks HATE to lose traction races, but it's all in the tires and (traction control)!

I have18" AT Italia w/ 225 Dunlop M3
Just got them on Friday from Luke@tirerack.com. The tires include a $50 rebate, and the wheels are closouts at $139 each. Also have the TPWS sensors. Looks like they'll be very easy to clean. I'm looking into fitting Audi emblems on the centercaps. I'll trial fit today and post some pics.
