Default Spare Tire

I have always been concerned that a serious flat in the wild west would mean 2 to 3 days waiting for a spare tire. I was surprised when this problem occured in LA (see earlier posts).

I bought snow tires (225-45-18's from Tire Rack). I tried to find a suitable jack but I finally decided on the aluminum one from the A-4. It was ~$70 from the dealer. It sort of works but can hit the rocker panel if you are not careful.

The following photo show how I've lashed the tire in the trunk. I'm using 1 inch webbing straps with metal buckles. There is still plenty of trunk space. The tire has enough room to store the jack and some car prep supplies inside the wheel.

The wheels protrude a bit beyond the tire so they will wear/scratch if they are just put on the carpet. I used a bit of duct tape to protect the wear spots.

The next step is to buy a tire cover to protect the cargo from the tire but cutting in access to the lash points may be complicated.

Yeah, they pull down the hooks in the trunk...some sort of luggage holder. Very odd.

Default That ought to help the front/rear weight distibution, but hurt the gross weight.

Have been lucky enough so far not to have a catastrophic tire failure, hope you don't get the last laugh on me. I thought I was being compulsive adding an extra "Tireflate" and 12 volt compressor.
