Spare tire and tie-down strength flap (edited)
DG@Alta stowed a winter tire in his trunk using the luggage tie-downs. I was planning on doing the same thing this weekend when I went to the PCC fall foliage get-together. Will the tie-downs be able to take some spirited driving with the weight of the wheel lashed to them? It's not going to be flapping around like in an autocross or anything, but I'm presuming it'll be more than a leisurely Sunday drive. Thanks.

No problems with the tie down and no "flapping" around
I've driven 18K miles with a spare lashed into the trunk with no problems. Be sure to use nylon straps with heavy metal spring loaded and toothed clamps; not those weak loop over and back straps. I use a tire cover to protect the wheel from grit and sand that might get under the wheel. So far the wheel is OK abut I use duct tape on the summer wheel when it is the spare in the winter. The only problem is remembering to open the ski "flap" door before you lash down the tire if you plan to use the ski bag. Flap score=2
