sport auto: Audi RS4 on the N?rburgring (or bye bye M5)
GREAT TIME: 8.09 min - Audi RS4
At the Nordschleife the Audi RS4 can full advantagee out of its powerful 4.2-lites V8 engine which also will power the Audi R8. Thanks to the permanent 4WD there is no under- or oversteer, it just gets a bit unstable when braking very hard. The sports suspension plus and the optional Pirelli P Zero Corsa sports tyres allow the Audi driver to go to the limits and to be neary as fast a Porsche Carrera S at its home track.
Also fited with the optional cermaic disk brakes the RS4 showed no fading even at the race track.
The RS4 is no drift king so loses at a short track like the Hockenheimring against the more powwrful Dodge Viper but also handles better than such a heavyweight like the much more powerful Mercedes SL 65 AMG.
0 - 200 - 0 km/h in 21.8 secs., quicker than the Corvette C6 and the SLK 55 AMG thanks to the better traction of the permananet 4WD and the better brakes.
aerodynamic balance:
The RS4 is no super sportscar but a limousine prodcing no downforce at 200 km/h. It gets lighter in front than in rear thanks to the rear spoiler changing the balance positively.
1.25 max. lateral acceleration on track is not bad for a car that weigh 1728 kg. The Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres have benen modified and now offer a better wet handling than under dry conditions.
36m Salom:
the RS4 handles well, the adaptive damper control makes it as fast as the CLK DTM AMG, looks like the RS4 also is directly derived from the DTM race car.
At the wet handling track it even handles better than the Porsche Carreras and takes the provisional pole position for that test thanks to the 4WD and the new Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres

RS4 Lap time scans

Nice. That's about what I expected...BUT!
This time is done on full track tires. Keep the street tires on the RS4 and it's slower than the M5 and only marginally faster than the old RS4.
On the 'ring, count on nearly 10 seconds difference between street and track tires.
The Porsche 911 Turbo tested 7:49 on street tires and 7:40 on track tires.
So, this certainly shows what the car is capable of...but doesn't really give good comparison to other cars equipped with street rubber.
FWIW, the E46 M3 CSL pulled a 7:50, also running on track rubber.

The Pirelli Corsa System...

Is not a *full* track tire. It's a street legal softer compound tire with plenty grooves to dissipate water. Although it is a better summer tire than the ordinary maximum performance tires like the PS2 and PZero Rosso, it is very far from a full track tire. I have had and still have this tire on more than one car. They are OEM on Ferrari's, Porsche's and Lamborghini's among other cars. Optional on the RS4 in the ROW.
Personally, I think this tire is the best non-track street tire for a performance car. But, it is far from the plain "Corsa" or the "Pilot Sport Cup" and other similar tires.

Of course there is a difference, BUT
Well, the BMW M6 was on the same type of tires.
And it got the same time.
Of course there is a difference, BUT the Corsas ARE AN OPTION just like the Michelins were on the M3 CSL.

Take it as you will. They have a treadwear rating of 60.
They aren't a full slick as that isn't exactly road legal. IMO, it's not a tire I'd be driving much on the street.
I know what you are saying, it IS OEM in Europe.
However, don't miss my point. 90% of the cars in the Supertest have normal street tires. The tires make the Audi look better than it is. I've been in the RS4 with and without the Pzero Corsas. It's a huge difference.

I agree completely with your verdict. I really would have wished ..
that they had tested it with "normal" street tires.
The Pirelli's are close to the Michelin Cups but nothing close to street tires.
Nonetheless, Audi have put a fine automobil on the road and the competion is going to have a hard time against it.
