Default Steering wheel shimmy at 70+ mph

Hey all -

Weird experience this morning while driving to work in the lovely rain...my steering wheel was shaking but it ONLY seemed to be noticeable at about 70 mph or more. I slowed down to 60 and it was smooth. Does this sound like a wheel is out of balance somewhere? Last I drove it was on Friday evening with the wife and it was perfectly fine.

Default Bad steering wheel

J/K. Yes, that sounds exactly like a tire balance problem. Check your tire tread for foreign objects (stones/etc.) and for chunk-outs. Also check your wheels for mud, ice, snow, etc. or evidence of missing tape-weights.

Default Most likely - but cause could be

1. thrown weight
2. bent rim
3. tire damage

with this new of a car I would not suspect bent suspension components

Default Agreed. Inspected rim this morning and looks ok. I'd guess thrown weight or tire..

Damn...and here I was hoping to sell my rims before needing to buy tires.

Default I had this too - 68-72mph the steering wheel would shake, but only on the 10 freeway...

turned out to be the way the concrete is grooved for water runoff and how the Dunlops throw a fit because of it. Doesn't happen on any other roads.

Default Yeah thats what I thought (maybe the road) but it happened on 3 different freeways...

The $40 checkup is worth the peace of mind too
