What did you think about tight engine tolerances being listed as one of the causes?

Default That seems doubtful

I'm not sure how tight tolerances lead to sludge. But after sludge occurs, I can see how sludge in a tight tolerance engine can cause more damage. If the viscosity gets too high, because of sludge, then there will be higher bearing wear.

I think cause and effect are being conflated together here.

That's what I was thinking. Tolerances sounds not right, but tighter/smaller/poorly designed oil passages may be what they're referring to.

However, there must be some factual evidence to make the 'tolerance' claim though...interesting.
