having taken quite a jolt from a pothole the EPC light has come on, all seems fine, no power loss no other noticeable issues. Next step?

While I would never attempt to answer for Reggie, I can perhaps assist.

VAG-COM will allow you to read exactly what the error is (as far as the system will specify), which is the first step in the troubleshooting process.
