Default throttle question

I looked around didn't see any mention of this so my apologies if this was addressed in the forum previously.

On WOT (primarily but not only in sport mode), at about 6000 rpm there is a sudden surge of power. Car pulls hard ( I never noticed the flat spot mentioned by others at 2600-3000 rpm.) Good linear power with no other issues.

It is a strange feeling. As the needle swings past 6000 rpm there is a noticeable increase in acceleration. It is as if I was accelerating at 7/8 and suddenly put the pedal flat to the wood. It occurs in 2nd as I rarely am at 6000 rpm in third (let alone 4th) on the street. I don't notice it in first gear, but as the whole acceleration thing in first doesn't take a long time, I might be missing it.

Thoughts? I am bringing it in on Wednesday for routine (and DRC issue) service.

Anyone else have this? The car runs otherwise well.

Thanks in advance.

Default The variable valve timing changes at 5500 rpm and the airbox "flap" opens to allow more air flow at

this rpm as well.

I believe that is what you are feeling.

Intake manifold also switches over to a shorter tract, tuned for high rpm power

I didn't think the RS4 version of the 4.2 had multi-stage intake..

Default The RS4 engine does not have a variable intake manifold. It has flaps in the intake manifold instead

"In contrast to the basic engine, maximum torque is produced at higher engine RPM. At this engine speed, the intake manifold changeover valve would be switched to the short path for higher power output."

See page 21 in the PDF below.<ul><li><a href="http://www.jlosee.com/images/RS4/PDF/audi.ssp.921603.pdf">http://www.jlosee.com/images/RS4/PDF/audi.ssp.921603.pdf</a</li></ul>

Default Thank you to all

I never really noticed it before, and I am at nearly 5000 miles. I can (and did) replicate the effect this morning. I knew it had variable timing, but I didn't expect quite the kick in the pants.

It would appear I was just too drunk with the excitement of exploiting this car's capabilities previously to notice it.
