What the RS4 needs is...
Bass!
Contemplating a sub/amp install but i am loathe to change things up too much not to mention having some teenagers ripping apart the interior of my vehicle.
So what is needed for just a sub install?
10 or 12" sub, Amplifier
Power for Amp...

Yup. What I did was.....

I added a JL Audio 8W7 sub and JL 250 watt amp to the stock Bose system. With the Bose system now freed up from the burden of bass, the mids and highs are much cleaner. The 8W7 JL sub packs a punch but it doesn't totally overpower the stock system either. As a result, the entire system is transformed in a way you can't imagine until you hear it. I just wanted more bass, but I what I got was a completely transformed audio system. I HIGHLY recommend this mod.

Slick install, looks great.
No more ability to pass large objects from trunk to back seat...hmmm. I don't know if i could give that up.
You considered the right/left side cubby holes in the trunk i assume?

I know utility was sacrificed in this regard but I use my other vehicle when I really need to haul stuff. You can do this entire install also just using one side of the trunk. The Bose amp is on the right side of the trunk just behind the trunk vent. You can construct a panel that will nicely fit the side of the trunk and can serve as both a mounting platform for an amp and as the face of a sub box which utilizes the right cubby space as the enclosure for the sub. You can do whatever cosmetic stuff you like obviously. I have at times thought about converting my install to exactly this but I really don't have the need.

Re: More info on connecting amp to Bose...please
The exact sequence of what you need to do depends on your amp. The JL amp had the following features which made it very appealing for this application:
1. Ability to accept high-level input. You will still need a speaker-wire to RCA adaptor since the JL only accepts RCA inputs
2. Signal sensing turn-on. This means you don't need to run a separate turn-on power wire to the amp
3. High level of adjustability in terms of input/output levels, frequency roll-offs, etc. that make it easy to seamlessly mate with the stock system.
I tapped into the signal coming out of the Bose amp going to the right rear speaker. You can not use the wire going to the stock sub as the signal sensing turn-on requires a full range signal to activate. You will need to get a wiring diagram for the car. I used one from a B6 S4 which some one e-mailed me and it was identical. Sorry, don't have it any more.
Since the battery is in the trunk, routing power to the amp
itself is a breeze.
