I'm trying to figure out if the same thing will happen to the S5. I don't want an S5 if it weighs ~4,000 lbs.

Just a guess...
Guessing:
Recaro seats (biggy)
different glass
front and rear bumpers, braced for crashing
trunk lid
lights
steering wheel
19" wheels/tires (18" standard elsewhere)
You can thank Nader's raiders, NHTSA and U.S. DOT for most the extra weight BS and us not getting the cool stuff like the steering wheel.

I think the low weight figure for the Euro model is a base Euro-spec car.
meaning: shell seats, no premium pkg, no sunroof, 18" wheels, and probably a few other things that are standard in the US that they don't get standard. That *should* all add up to about 200lbs, give or take. The US spec weight figure often quoted is a pretty much loaded car...premium, sunroof, etc. It wouldn't surprise me if there are some hidden sources of extra weight in the US spec cars, such as door bracing or heftier bumpers, but no one here has identified anything like that (AFAIK).

These things are tanks...my car weighed 3980...empty
That's with a lighter exhaust system, half a tank of fuel, too.
Add another 200 lbs for the driver and you have one heavy friggin car.
