WOW - a great $300 spent...
Just had an ECS H-Pipe installed. Best $300 spent yet. Same sound as stock (I have my exhaust flaps permanently open - don't like the toggle feel of the accelerator with the Sport button so I have the vacuum lines plugged), but louder and a little deeper. A little sputter, too, between gears.
For the first time in about 6 months I can't wait to go out and drive the car. Wouldn't you know it's cold in Phoenix this weekend...too cold to run around with the windows open to hear the rumble.
I would highly recommend this to anyone contemplating the change.
BTW - I have no tie to ECS, just a satisfied pair of ears...

Did you hook your flaps back up again then?
I have the ECS H-Pipe too and for me, it's too loud with flaps open unless racing. Perfect sound & volume with them closed though - which like you say, is a good thing because I too hate the hyperactive throttle ramp with the S button. Did you install it yourself?

I still have my flaps open. From inside the car the sound is perfect, though I may change my mind if I ever hear the car from the outside (i.e. with someone else driving the car). Even though I like the sound as is, in my aging years I've learned that average Joe on the street my not have the same taste - If it's too loud, I may tone it down by closing the exhaust flaps as you mentioned.
My last car was an E39 M5 with lots of Dinan parts, including the exhaust. Talk about loud. 90% of the time I loved it, but the other 10% it became a bit embarrassing. But boy, the sound of the roar on startup...similar to the RS4 now with the H-Pipe.
I had it installed by a local Midas - took them an hour (about what I figured), so it probably would have taken me 2 or 3. I decided it wasn't worth my time to potentially screw it up myself, plus I didn't have a good blade on hand to do the cuts.
Thanks for the tip on the closed-flap sound...I may try it anyway just to hear the difference.

the other thing you could try is just to close *one* of the flaps.
i.e. reconnect one of the vacuum lines, but leave the other one plugged. might split the different between 'too loud' and 'not loud enough.'
