Default X-Post: Complete Testing of the Hyperflow V84 Induction intake versus the OEM stock Airbox....

Summer is fast approaching as is the time for barbecues, beer, and modifying our automobiles to get that extra punch for our weekend drives. One such modification even sounds like it was made just for our wonderful summer conditions...the cold air intake. During this testing MJB Motorsport installed the Stratmosphere Hyperflow V84 Induction System on the Audi S4. The following are the results of a head to head comparison of this intake versus the stock Audi S4 airbox.

CONDITIONS/PROCEDURE:

All testing was performed the same day during the same ambient temps. In order to give both intakes the same amount of time for ECU adaptation, the Hyperflow Induction V84 was first installed on the vehicle and tested under the following ambient conditions...

<img src="http://www.mjbmotorsport.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/.pond/hyperflowTest-Temp-Ambient.jpg.w300h225.jpg">

Next, the stock airbox was installed and testing was initiated under the following ambient conditions...

<img src="http://www.mjbmotorsport.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/.pond/StockboxTest-Temp-Ambient.jpg.w300h225.jpg">

The variables compared during the test session were Airflow, Intake Air Temperature, and Overall Timing. The theory behind this test protocol is that a cold air intake should provide two benefits. The first is increased intake air volume due to a proposed superior intake design. The second is increased air volume and increased timing due to lowered intake air temperatures.

RESULTS:

Time to see if the assumptions pan out. The following is a comparison of the Airflow logs from the stock airbox and the Hyperflow V84 Induction...

<img src="http://www.mjbmotorsport.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/S4-Intake-Timing-Comparo-1.jpg">

CONCLUSION:

The stock airbox produced somewhat higher airflow readings as well as significantly lower intake air temperatures allowing the vehicle to self adjust in more timing. It is likely that the decreased airflow and increased timing are a result of the lowered intake temps afforded by the stock airbox. What is interesting to note is that MJB Motorsport even added increased heat shielding to the Hyperflow V84 Induction intake as had been positively commented on by the manufacturer on a website forum. Despite all attempts made to get the Hyperflow to produce positive numbers, the stock airbox appears to be the best bet in warm ambient conditions.

Default As I mentioned in the ALMS Vitesse program article...

Even the RS4 Challenge car is using the stock RS4 airbox and filter. Must flow pretty well.

Default Nice work, Mike!

It's been clear to me, as I look at the design of these engines, that Audi has spent some significant time in modeling the flow dynamics of the intake and cylinder heads. This is especially true of the FSI engines.

Default Thanks Scott. The box is solid. I have no idea on the heads...

or what would happen if we adopted a larger TB and different manifold but maybe not much. I've thought similarly that you go with a full exhaust and then concentrate on weight, brakes and suspension until you are willing to force feed this car.

Typical.. Aftermarket setups are usually hot air intakes. The stock box gets ONLY fresh air.
