Default YAOAR (Yet Another Oil Analysis Request)

I know that there are a few of you out there who are using Mobil 1 0W-40 in your engines. For the long term oil analysis project one owner has sampled their Mobil 1 oil and has come up with some interesting results. To be complete, I'd like to see at least one more sample, so that reasonable conclusions can be made.

If any of you are using Mobil 1 0W-40 European, I would appreciate it if you could take an oil sample and have it analyzed by Terry Dyson.

Please contact me for any additional questions.

Default Re: YAOAR (Yet Another Oil Analysis Request) - Not Mobil1 related

sorry for interfering, but apart from the Mobil1, I will get today the Motul 8100 X-lite 0W30 and use it in a week for oil change at 8000km (first oil change was @1200km with Motul 8100 E-tech 0W40).

No way for me to do any oil tests around here (Athens, Greece).

>> An open question to Europeans reading this: Has anyone ever sent an oil sample to USA for testing? How?

To be honest, I'm even thinking to keep an oil sample from the Motul E-tech and take it with me, next time I'm in US (this August, in Las Vegas and San Francisco). Is there a problem with the quality of the sample if I keep it so long in a bottle? :-) Also, airlines/customs might think I'm transferring a new ... dangerous substance.. Oh God...

RI, I'd love to add another sample to your database but still ... a long way from US :-)
take care,
Thanos

PS- up to 7000 km, I had to add about 2 liters (2+ qts) of oil. I will monitor oil consumption after the new Motul gets in the beast...

Default Can you elaborate?

Or, are the Mobil 1 0W-40 results inconclusive @ this time?

I am planning to use Mobil 1 as a replacement for my first oil change (I only have 1400 miles on the odometer). I've used in my Porsches w/o issue or concern.

So, naturally, I'm curious of the initial test results & would be happy to provide samples down the road (assuming I continue to use this product).

Default a bit of elaboration

The result is so different from other results we have that I'd like to see another sample from at least another engine running Mobil 1. There is excessively high wear in one of our metals that is significantly different than what we've seen to date, which could be due to the oil, or could be due to other causes. The engine has 17K miles on it and may not have been treated nicely in it's early life.

Default Another one for your database

Scott - I'm emailing you my latest oil report. I tried to email Dyson a couple weeks ago asking for instructions on payment/shipping a sample that I already collected, and never rec'd a response. So I gave up on Dyson and sent the sample to Blackstone Labs again, who seem very responsive. BTW, I asked Blackstone how they do fuel dilution. They use flash point to estimate fuel in the oil. Not the most accurate, but they claim it's sensitive down to 0.5%, and mine came up non-detect again. Next up will be an analysis of Penzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40 in about 2 months.

Default can you elaborate on whether M1,,,

is true synthetic and not hydro-cracked dino oil? i'm curious as to whether M1 has followed some others in claiming hydro-cracked to be 100% synthetic.

Default My understanding is that it is still predominantly PAO

That seems to be confirmed by the -54F pour point.
