How about this from BMW?

Boy that ups someone's $500 a year for oil to about $1250! Anyway...
I can only figure that less tight internal engine tolerances, necessary to avoid excessive friction and heat build up in these higer revving performance engines, is the possible culprit.

I have to say that I'm now impressed with how little oil the RS4 consumes and......
yes I don't care about dropping $1500 during the life of the car to top it off. If that were a problem I shouldn't be buying the car in the first place;-)

Well...
I would be concerned(me) on two counts.
1. I consider it an unnecessary waste of money to be dumping in qts of expensive synthetic oil right and left.
2. I would not enjoy the hassle of having to constantly worry about the oil level, warning light or not.
In the grand scheme of things, I can appreciate your point about the monetary thing, though.

well it seems that bimmers and porsches require that even more so...
...and it shouldn't be "left and right" after break-in. consumption drops over time as components are seated, unless there is a problem.
lots of cars burn oil. their owners just don't know and don't do anything about it, and it's taken care of at the next service interval. but since these high-performance engines go through it faster, you have to pay closer attention to it. it isn't an "RS4 thing".

I generally agree...
"unless there is a problem" is key here. You'll probably be okay after miles pile up, as with most others. I have had the opposite outcome with another VAG car a few years ago, so that's why I'm being a little over vigilant here.

yeah, i've heard some anecdotal consumption stories, where things didn't get better...
...but i'm on my 6th audi and literally have not had even one (1) problem that wasn't handled with simple maintenance, and under warranty. <i>nothing.</i> that's driving in all kinds of weather on all kinds of roads, with and without turbos.
again, that's just my anecdotal experience, but it holds alot of weight for me... since i'm me ;-)
