$800.00 repair bill under warranty.

Front brakes and a new battery at 21.5k miles today cost me 8 large. OUCH! I mistakenly assummed a 2006 S4 would be good for a while. Guess not.

Kenny 05-06-2008 02:08 PM

Brakes I can understand if you don't have Audicare, but why did you pay for a new battery ??

I thought 4 year 50k mile new car warranty means just that,, covers everything except tires and routine maintenance...

MiS4terTed 05-06-2008 02:16 PM

Re: $800.00 repair bill under warranty.

Yep, I paid $575 for front pads and rotors recently.

bhvrdr 05-06-2008 02:22 PM

LOL, that's just stealership pricing. Rotors are $68 a piece, pads $50 for the pair...

and a battery about $80. Installation shouldnt take anyone half way competent more than an hour for it all. Just never go to the dealership out of warranty and you're fine.

Eric - The Red S4 05-06-2008 02:28 PM

Nope. IIRC, brakes are covered only in first 12k. Battery might be similar.

Eric - The Red S4 05-06-2008 02:32 PM

Batteries can go at anytime and so can brakes depending on how you drive...

I had to get a new battery about a year ago I think. Engine heat, environmental heat, demands from electrical system. Not too surprising.

Also more recently had the front pads and rotors replaced. It was much cheaper than I would have expected but I don't recall what it was exactly.

My brakes/rotors didn't go until about 35,000 though and that included several "spirited" group drives and one track day.

Gotta pay to play I guess even though we don't like to.

At least it wasn't a clutch.

Eric.

Rhino02 05-06-2008 03:23 PM

My battery went out at 18000 miles and the dealer replaced it for free.

Re: $800.00 repair bill under warranty.

I thought the maintenance plan was for the 2006? Are you over 50k?

SPhwoarr 05-06-2008 10:01 PM

Ditto. Only non-warranty items seem to fail on this car!

Brake wear warning came on at 18K miles, rotors and pads replaced for $700 at Beverly Hills Audi (ouch!). Chalk that up to LA traffic and driving with a bit of enthusiasm but next time the brakes need changing I am going elsewhere.

At 22K, car wouldn't start without jumping. I wasn't sure if it was the battery or something else so I took it to the dealer. They said the battery had packed up and was replaced for the low low price of $450!!! Mega ouch, total rip off!

To make matters worse, they recently replaced a blown balast (the well known headlight flicker). When they went to put the bumper back on, they must have used a bunch of unskilled workers to do it because I could have done a better job with a blindfold on!

SPhwoarr 05-06-2008 10:05 PM

Battery is 12k or at least that's what the dealer told me.

steveAZ 05-06-2008 10:14 PM

WOW...

I've had both done recently all under warranty. I can't imagine an 05.5 is different than an '06.

Battery was done @ ~15k
Front Brakes w/ new rotors @ ~25k

bpp 05-07-2008 01:17 AM

Kinda makes you want to learn dyi brakes, doesn't it?

s4for5_TTfor2 05-07-2008 04:17 AM

Ft brakes with rotors is $ 483.00 w/labor quoted by local Audi dealer in the North East?

myS4XTC 05-07-2008 05:01 AM

Different warranties???

I just had my battery replaced for free on my '05 S4 completely under warranty, and I'm at 49,500 miles. Since I just purchased this car, and it's my first Audi, I was curious from the post - are there different warranties or are some of the dealers just taking advantage of people. It seems to me that trimikes battery should have been covered.

jsh139 05-07-2008 06:16 AM

Brakes are not covered in the maint plan for 06. Not sure about battery.

trimike 05-07-2008 06:30 AM

Re: $800.00 repair bill under warranty.

Dealer says the battery covered for only 12 months. Warranty is a factory one. Interesting that a few other people with Avants have had brakes AND battery replacement at around same mileage (and I had a balast go out on the lights)!? Maybe they made changes in coverage from .5 to 06.

Being an old motorhead (musclecars: GTO, 67 Chevelle, V8 Vega), yes, I could have eventually done the work myself but regular Life commitments don't wait. Its hard to pull all the necessary equipment together in a short period of time. (My last foray into self -repair was on a 1980 Scirocco for brakes-finsihed one side no problem-other side: the bleed screw stripped and had to order a new rotor-it took a week and I was bumming rides for a while-not much fun :-( )So now I have somebody else do it. I guess thats why the price bugs me. Thanks for your input.

Dr.quattro 05-07-2008 07:11 AM

I had the battery bug also.

Funny how the original battery is only good for like 10,000 miles, but the replacement battery is good for 2 years or something. Just keep the receipt.

SPhwoarr 05-07-2008 07:59 AM

Yes

They made minor changes to the warranty between 05 and 06 with respect to things like batteries, brakes, etc. Trust me, I protested both on the brakes and the battery at which point they showed me the changes in coverage and I would then shut up and fork out the cash.

bzcat 05-07-2008 08:56 AM

our car eats brakes like crazy... probably why Audi doesn't cover it anymore... lol

MartyList 05-07-2008 05:42 PM

Make sure you verify the warranty coverages...

...in your warranty guide. Recently the dealer showed me some very official looking warranty coverages from AoA and said that's what they are required to go by. I checked my warranty guide (a book that came with the car, next to the owner's manual) and it had completely different info. I saved $750 on 2 headlight bulbs. More info:

SPhwoarr 05-07-2008 06:15 PM

Not the case with my warranty guide

Says batteries, brakes, bulbs, clutches, wipers, etc are not covered after the first 12 months.

Eric - The Red S4 05-07-2008 06:59 PM

Even more odd I believe the change was mid model '06.

oatzel 05-07-2008 07:36 PM

fronts are like a 20 minute job if you hustle. taking the wheels on and off is the most time

consuming part

trimike 05-08-2008 07:09 AM

2005.5 vs. 2006

I looked at the warranty info. supplied with the vehicles last night and there is a substantial difference between my wife's .5 S4 and my 06 just as was stated. I have an early 06 so I don't think there was a mid year change. Ah well, live and learn; at least she gets some benefits :-)

Ubersonic 05-08-2008 04:01 PM

Heh, for $190 each you could have had DBA 4000 rotors...

...and picked up some sweet carbotech pads for about $100.

If it isn't warrantied...don't go to the dealer.

bpp 05-08-2008 05:20 PM

new, slotted 4K's you'll get one rotor. :P
