Considering 2005 S4 Avant purchase - Advice?
This one showed up the other day, interested. Not real jazzed about the Tip tranny, but it may get better milage than the MT, right?
Other questions:
- High milage for an '05? (55,547)
- Out of warranty, right? Concern?
- Things to ask about (problem areas)?
- What is the real world gas milage you can expect on this (city/hwy)?
- Concerns about the mods?
- Performance, Tip vs 6MT? Worth waiting for MT S4?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!<ul><li><a href="http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp?paId=258390672">S4 Avant</a></li></ul>

Wait for the 6MT... but for milage im not getting to bad.
I have been averaging around 20-24 driving from work and back around 70 mph.
The only thing that I have that has gone wrong are those stupid coil packs.
For what you pay its great performance. I just drove an SRT8 Charger at work and a Porsche 911, our cars will out handle the charger any day through curves and we have much more space than the 911.
Mods will be expensive 2k for brakes if you want them, 4k for a milltek exhaust (its my favourite), the software will be around 600, and the suspension if you go the stasis route will cost you around 3.5k
My only problem now is that I am slowly falling in love with the Porsche 911 Carrera 4S and don't really need a back seat because of the lack of children.
But for the money the S4 is the bomb!!!

comments from an 87 k TIP avant owner:
Mileage about right; 14 - 17k per year (I do about 27k/yr.) Performance is good for either; most prefer MT for fine tuning driving control, but how aften are you going to do that kind of driving? For that 10% or so, get used to the paddles and you'll have nearly the same control except for the down-shifts which are WAY too slow (I've heard a tranny chip can fix some of that). I've been out of warranty for quite a while - so far I'm way ahead financially (one warranty item, power window regulator cost me about $360). Ad doesn't mention what mods car has, so no comment. Mileage overall is about 21 - 22. Only problem I've had is premature rear brake failure (recent discovery) casued by too much tension on e-brake cable - inner pads zero mm, outer pads 3 - 3.5mm - make sure you check as it is not a common service inspection. Seems a really good price. If you decide against, let me know - might be the right car for my daughter.
