Dreaded ABS Brake light combo...

My ABS and Brake light have been beeping and blinking at me for a few weeks now. I brought it into Audi for a regular service and had them check the codes. They claim the ABS controller is intermittingly failing. I think it's a wiring problem, but they will never admit it. I just got the VAG tool too. Does anyone know if the VAG will tell me something different/better than Audi will? And is there a wiring harness I can check myself to fix this $1200+ nightmare?

Umm it should be covered under warrenty......

And is a safety concern I would bring the car in and say you dont want it back till its fixed. Open a case with Audi and they will see that its a safety issue that needs to be addressed.

Oh, I forgot to mention that it just came on at around 99k miles (literally!!) and my extended warranty ran out at 100k. I was moving at the time and couldn't bring it to my dealer to get fixed...I think they make these parts last just long enough so they don't have to pay for it...

Actully, I have a B5 (2000). I just realized that I'm on the B6 forum. sorry about that. To answer the question though, I did lots of driving in New Jersey commuting.

no worries

I'm in the same situation....

2000 S4, 128k miles, ABS and brake light flashing and beeping for a few weeks now.

My fix? I'm buying a 2005 S4 instead of doing the various repairs that the B5 needs. I'm going to get killed on the trade in value due to the miles, but I'll be happy to have a new car again.

Brian.

Not exactly, Not a safety issue

Brakes will function just fine without ABS so its not considered a safety problem or a out of warrenty claim, same applies to any airbags in vehicles. If you wear your seatbelts then airbags are considered an additional layer of protection not the primary. If you don't wear seatbelts the Airbags can do as much damage as if you hit the dash or windshield.

My 96 Volvo 850 has the ABS problem for about 4 years, the problem is the control module under the drivers seat. The motherboard has become brittle and due to temperature extremes can cause intermittant shorts which deactivate the ABS. Sometimes it works for months then goes out and the light comes on. Part costs $589 plus labor brakes have worked fine just without ABS and the few times I have had to stop or avoid things the ABS has activated 2-3 times.

Airbags the same, my passenger side airbag may or may not deploy, SRS light is on in cluster, $1000 to replace module plus labor. All other Airbags are functioning fine, not a safety issue passes inspection every year, will need to pass new law that states ABS/SRS systems must function to pass inspection and make it a safety issue.
