My factory warranty will elapse next spring and I'm sorting through the options. The main options are keeping the S4 (with or without an extended warranty) and selling or trading in the S4 against something else. I actually really like the look of the B8 A4 S-Line and would like to see what the B8 S4 looks like before committing to another car, so I'm inclined toward keeping the S4 until that happens. I'm nervous about keeping it without some form of warranty, though.

It seems like folks have spoken about both extended warranties and a kind of sketchy CPO process around here, so I wanted to get thoughts from folks about how they've proceeded and, ideally, how much it's cost them.

First off, can someone explain the advantages of CPO vs. a normal extended warranty? Is it maintenance-inclusive or something? To get CPO it sounds like you have to have a dealer who will basically purchase your car from you and sell it back to you for the same price plus the cost of CPO certification, right? I've seen numbers for that ranging from $1.5K all the way to $4K. Can someone provide more concrete numbers? Can anyone recommend a dealer in central TX (Austin, San Antonio, Houston, or Dallas/Fort Worth) who performs this type of service?

I don't know of any dealer who will do it for the same sale price but they will likely do it for a reasonable fee plus the cost of CPO.

CPO is better than an extended warranty because it's backed by Audi. No hassles with getting warranty repairs authorized or paid for. It typically covers as much or more than most extended warranties and you can take it to any Audi dealer with no worries about it being honored.
