My new 2004 S4 whines
I changed the serpentine belt, tensioner and idler pullies today but that annoying whining sound is still there. Is this a "normal" sound on the B6 S4's?
You can start to hear it at 2500 rpm and it gets really loud at 3000 rpm but it doesen't get much louder after that.
Any suggestions or am I trying to eliminate something that is a design flaw?
Do you B6 S4 owners have this same whining sound coming from the engine?

I had to have mine done twice. Take it back and have them do it again.
Tell them they either didn't replace all the parts or got defective replacemant parts. OR just tell them to do what is necessary to fix the problem. This is a well known issue. Car should not whine.

It's suppose to, gear driven PTO
if it's a high pitched whistle, that starts around 2k and stops around 3k that would be your alternator belt tensioner pulley. But it would be a very noticeable start and stop and high pitch whistle noise.

Got it scheduled to go to a dealership.Hope they can solve my problem. In talking to them they do not seem to know about this. I know they have an 04 for sale on their lot, I'll have them try that one to be able to compare. Unfortunately, this is my first B6 S4 so I don't have another to compare it to.
I just hope it's not a "normal" sound.
If I can convince the shop that just did the pulley change to do it again what should I look out for in the replacement parts? Any special color code or name? Should I look for a specific name on the actual bearing?
Thanks for all the help guys
S4iowa, what's a PTO?
