Default Pecking Order for Cars on the German Autobahn

According to the TV show "Megastructures" on the Discovery Channel, there is an unofficial pecking order for cars on the German autobahn. Which means if you are in the fast lane and see one of higher order behind you, get out of the way as fast as you can. The order in reverse is:

5. VW
4. Audi
3. BMW
2. Mercedes-Benz
1. Porsche

Default Re: Pecking Order for Cars on the German Autobahn

I was amazed in 1969 how much deference we were given driving our new Volvo 1800 which could barely go 100 mph. We got much less respect later, in our 1990 Coupe Quattro which could hit 140 (given a long, clear strech). I really wish Audi still had European delivery, Volvo does.

Default I live in Germany and drive the bahn daily and I can tell you that everyone gets out of my way...

so far! I have not had the pleasure of a challenge yet. I have not run into any playful M3s, AMGs or 911s, so maybe I'm unlucky?! I have run through a few 5 and 7 series that would not move until I prodded them a bit then they tried to keep with me. No luck for them.

When I had my 1.8T it was a diffrent story. All the TDIs here will eat your lunch, just not the S.

My $.02 worth.

Default Yep, been that way since Autobahns were first built by AH

Can't be overlooked, just one drive on the Autobahn will prove it. But it is the way the law sets it up as well,

On a 3 lane Autobahn
Far right (outside) Trucks, busses, vans, RV's, sm trucks/cars towing trailers. Cars if you want to deal with all the big guys.

Middle All cars, any of the above for passing only.

Left (inside) Passing for cars, small vans, trucks (suv's) No one should remain in this lane for long periods, even the exotics going 150mph+ move to the middle from time to time. Travelling at those speeds for longer than say 15min really puts a strain on body and mind unless the person is a seasoned Autobahn driver. You have to watch your rearview mirrors really good, those highbeams 2-3mi back will be on you in less than a minute eventhough you might be travelling at 110mph+, in my case a GT3 going around 180mph+.

If you went taday its a little different with the increase in traffic, more Fords, Opels, and foreign cars are in the left lane and they aren't as polite as 20yrs ago. Bad habbits they lean from us in the US as well as many vehicles travelling through Germany say from Poland to France.

Another good thing about Autobahns are that trucks aren't allowed to drive from 5pmm friday to sunday midnight unless they have special permission, really clears up the road.

Default I know what you mean by unlucky ... I never see M3s now that I have the S4

I was always next to M3s at the light when I had my 330Ci, but now that I can actually "play" I never see any M3s :-(

I think the show referred to Audis in general (mostly diesel or 1.8T) and not specifically S cars.

Default I agree, that is why I said what I said about the TDIs...

But you posted on the S4 fourum so I'm putting my S4 spin on it! I totally agree about the normal cars. In my 1.8T I would get run down daily by other A4 TDIs, 325 BMWs, and C class MBs.

Glad I took the "S" step!
