Default Timing chain question..

I was not aware about the issue of the timing chain. When I sold BMW's in my youth (many years ago), we were told that one of the advantages of their timing chain over a belt was that it never had to be replaced. My TT had a timing belt that had to be replaced at 90-100K miles.(although the consencus was at 60-65K). When and why does the timing chain of S4 have to be replaced and at what cost? I thought I was finished with timing belt/chain worries?

I believe it's the tensioners which will cause problems, not the chain itself.

Default The chain itself does stretch ever so slightly over time, but in most cases it is inperceptible as

by the time the chain shows some minute elongation, the rest of the engine is likely to be getting a little "tired" as well. But the tensioners would most likely fail before the chain ever would. I've replaced timing chains before but that was because the engine was already torn apart for some other problem and the replacement was prophylactic in nature.

Default And I'm sure Audi has finally created a reliable tensioner...

that will actually last as long as they claim.

Default Weird. Because mine was never replaced, only removed and re-installed after the engine swap...

but no noise ever. Hmm...

Also, I'm trying to get a copy of that TSB.

Default My understanding is...

not all of them are bad, but an overwhelming majority are. Anyone who has the noises you heard on my car needs to have it replaced.

Default What were the noises?

You're not talking about the prominent whirring sound from the engine, are you?

Default The whine during driving is the PTO. (it's driven by straight gears) He's talking about...

the whine/groan at cold-start's. Doesn't sound good.
