Timing chain replacement
I am going to assume the B6 S4 4.2 has a timing chain and not a timing belt. If so, when should it replaced? I have 70k on my 2004 S4 now.
Are there instructions on how to do it? Any special tools? Thanks, Chris |
i believe those stay on unless you run into issues.

Never
There is no required maintenance interval replacement of this
|
i think that is what they said about the tranny/diff fluid as well. =)

Requires engine removal - chain is on the back side of this engine so it's a pretty big job.

Supposed to be like the nightmare from hell---MAJOR job. Yecchh.
My Avant has 80K now, almost all highway miles, but runs like a champ--praying she holds out! Have heard nothing but nightmare stories about timing chain replacement----not unlike the timing chain deal on a VR6.

I believe that it is good to 100 or 115k. You should check the serpentine belt at around 75..
which is on the front of the engine.

Please don't spread mis information. The chain is a lifetime part.
There is no required maintenance interval for it.

you have to REALLY beat the sh1t out of your car to need a timing chain replacement..
Typically, they'll start to stretch or bearings will need replacement if you track your car a lot.. but otherwise, with routine driving, they should be lifetime or 200k + miles..

Yeah, but that is a fluid involving gears. Common sense should overcome the recommendation :)
