Default It depends on the dealer. Dealer is required by Audi to use synthetic in all 05 and later models

04s have the exact same engine but audi does not require synthetic. No reason has ever been postulated for the difference.

Default To clarify for everyone, can you explain the change in oil requirement?

I received a letter in the mail from my dealer saying Audi changed oil requirements and they are now using some synthetic brand on everything but I forget which brand and if they specified the weight of the oil, or if it is different weights for different cars.

I want to say they are now using Castrol, but I don't remember. I remember thinking it wasn't Mobil 1, so I'd probably still be bringing my own oil every 10k when I have them change it.

Default well, i'm not exactly sure. i know with my 03 a4 3.0, synthetic wasn't required so I had to bring

my own oil if I wanted to use synthetic (and not pay dealer prices), but now that the oil has to meet VW502.00 and 505.01 and it seems like its largely synthetics that do, it doesn't seem like i should need to bring oil.

pdf is a list of oils meeting the specs<ul><li><a href="http://www.audiusa.com/etc/medialib/cms4imp/audi2/aoa/product/certified_pre_owned.Par.0011.File.pdf">Oil list</a></li></ul>

Default Nothing Magical about Mobil 1. I would have them put in the Castrol

Mobil 1 is a good synthetic. I have used it myself. But the Castrol should protect equally well as long as you are not stretching the change interval much over 7k.

Default that's what i'm saying. if they're going to run castrol synthetic in my car, there's no need for me

to bring my own oil. or at least for the first and only free change

Default I just figured I shouldn't switch between oils because I use Mobil 1 every 5 k, between the dealer

10k intervals.
