Where can I find a self-study read on the 4.2 in the S4? I remember coming across a great one...

published for the techs at the dealerships to get them acquainted w/ the 2.7TT in the B5 S4. Tons of very in-depth technical info. I'd like to know what differences there are in the S4's V-8 as opposed to the other cars it's in, considering it is so widely used in the Audi/VW lineup. How is it different than the S8 and S6 4.2's?

Biggest difference is the timing chain (and it's location in the rear). The accessories other than the alternator are driven off the timing chain.

What about in the cam profile and intake geometry, etc.? Is this all the same throughout the 4.2..

range? Are the pistons and rods forged as compared to the 4.2 A6, which will most likely not see too much redline? Are the internals the same?

Don't know the details but it is not the same as the 4.2 in the A6

its a completely different engine....

the entire thing is reversed since the chain is on the rear. I think the only thing in common with the other 4.2's is the block, I am pretty sure everything else is different.

Same engine as the new A6 4.2.

Revisions are mainly valve timing related to yield 5 hp less (can't have a volume vehicle making more power than the closest S model) at 500 fewer rpm but 8 ft/lbs more torque (good because the A6 carries more weight). The intake manifold on the S4 is two stage though. It's the same shortened V8 with the drive chains located in the rear of the engine.

The above linked pdf has info on the rods and pistons. Specs on the cams are MIA.

Hey guys, I am also looking for a self study guide on the V8 in the B7 S4. Searched for quite a bit but could not find one. Does anyone know how I can get it? Or if one exists?
