Default [Long] 2010 Audi S4 scheduled maintenance

Hey folks,

As a prospective buyer of a new car I like to compare not only prices but also insurance costs and maintenance costs as I want to have an idea of how much the car will cost me after I purchase it, at least for the first few years. As part of that, I visited one of my local Audi dealers and asked about the regular mantainance schedule with pricing up to 105K miles. I thought I would post them here in case somebody else is looking for the same information.

This is for the 2010 Audi S4 3.0T S-Tronic/DSG. I'm pretty sure the prices will vary depending on where you are. I would expect the procedures to be simiar though.

It's my understanding that Audi Care covers the 15K (1-year mark), 25K (2-year mark), 35K (3-year mark) and 45K (4-year mark) services and costs $740 (MSRP). It does not cover for any in-between oil changes you may want to perform. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's what I got:

Looks good and accurate - I just still cannot get anyone to comment on the servicing of the DSG. Previous versions (which granted are very different from that in the S4) required a fuild change at 40K miles pretty promptly as they are very sensitive to viscosity break down as well as particles getting into the mechatronics and clogging the sensitive and tiny valves therein.

I have the service schedule listed out to 125K miles (which is just 2 servicings past yours here - one at 115K and the 125K) and nothing shows work needing to be performed at all on the DSG for the S4, there are service intervals listed for DSG, but explicitly state "A3 and TT only."

Disturbing to me, as the DSG maintenance on the A3 and TT (as well as several VW's with them) runs 400-900 dollars US, which would make AudiCare totally worth it for anyone with S-tronic if it followed similar maintenance intervals. I can't believe the fuild is good forever though, and seeing no mention is odd.

I saw your other comments on the subject and was hoping you would reply here too. Perhaps we should ask Audi/dealers directly about the new transmission (if you havent' done so already)?

I did ask mine, it's where I have the entire Audi maintenance schedule for 2010 for all vehicles from

I posed the same questions to their service guys who said it sounded like and oversight to them as well taking into account how DSG's are. They are researching it, no word yet though.

I'd almost want to know if someone from Europe or Canada can check with their dealers to see if the info differs.

Hey NWS4Guy,

I just remembered something. VM/Audi was working on a 7-speed dual dry clutch transmission. I clearly remember seeing something around that a while ago. I did some quick research and I found this:

This year, Volkswagen is introducing a new-generation DSG with an extra gear [from 6] and dry clutches. The new seven-speed gearbox is more compact than the original and more efficient thanks in part to the dry clutches.
Source: VW to debut 7-speed DSG at end of year (2007)

Here's another article:

While BorgWarner's original DSG design has allowed for greater fuel-efficiency over traditional automatic transmissions, it has had room for improvement. The original design is a wet-clutch system, meaning the clutches operate in a bath of oil to keep temperatures down and eliminate wear. The oiling system requires large pumps to keep up the constant flow through the system and it also creates hydraulic drag that affects efficiency.
Source: BorgWarner builds a better DSG (2007)

I would bet this transmission (or a variantion of it) made it to the S4. If it did, that would explain why there's no oil change mentioned in the S4 scheduled maintenance.

Bruno.

I'll link you some articles on our specific DSG, it's still a wet clutch, though they now have 2 different seperate oil types and loops to increase performance and decrease problems. One is a hydrolic oil for the mechatronics, the other is a hypoid oil that cools the system, provides the wet clutches their oil for resistance and also lubes the gears in the transmission.

Adding up the numbers of paying for all this out of pocket at each service interval vs. paying for it via Audi Care is as follow's...

Paying for each visit separately $1,124.90 + tax

Audi Care $740.00 + tax

So the Audi Care is a deal...and if someone from Audi ever tells us that our DSG's need to be serviced within the Audi Care mileage coverage...then it's even a a better deal.

FYI..... I was informed by my dealer yesterday that the list price for AudiCare was raised to $790 this past week.

Of course, that presumes you would have the work done by the dealer if you didn't have Audi Care. Using an independent shop would likely be significantly cheaper.

What's the first service at 5,000miles run? If the above is correct, AudiCare doesn't cover this? I'm assuming it's just checking/filling the oil and some other steps?
