I installed a Google Fi data only sim into my 2013 S4 (3G+) and it works perfectly. Much better deal than the audi connect service. Performance is still pretty meh, around 2 Mb, but it isn't throttled to modem speeds like I was getting before, especially on uploads. Make sure to set your APN to h2g2
Next question is, Audi gave me the 3G/4G receiver upgrade but it only does 3G and 2G. How do I unlock actual 4G speeds like the 2015 models have? Is it possible with the VAG-COM?
It appears that the online destination feature does not work however. The mmi app
works if the phone is connected to the Wi-Fi hotspot in the car. It seems some functions stop require your myaudi account service to be active, however if you only care about maps and WiFi, Google fi works well.
Curious, how long ago did you get the 3G upgrade? I tried while my '13 was still in warranty, and AoA "ran the clock out" on my warranty with delay tactics, "we're checking, we'll get back etc." month after month, then said, sorry out of warranty. Any advice on getting the upgrade post warranty?

It was well over a year ago, maybe longer. They treated it as a recall. Just sent me a letter and asked me to come in for a new receiver.
