DIY: Hardwired Radar Detector Install
#21
Thanks for the great write-up Tails. I got my V1 installed today. The Bone Folder was a great suggestion. Picked one up from Michaels and it made the install that much easier.
Cheers!

ATO or ATM connector?
Great write-up! Planning to follow suit but have a question about which connector I need for the fuse box.
Can someone confirm that the "Mini" ATM one is the one I need? I read another DIY for the S5 showing the ATO connector and just wondering if Audi has a different fusebox or connectors on the S4s vs the S5s...
Links on Amazon:
ATM: http://www.amazon.com/Bussmann-BP-HH...dp/B000GKEXK2/
ATO: http://www.amazon.com/Littelfuse-FHA.../dp/B0002BGELQ
Thanks in advance!

4. Using a TAPA Circuit (ATO, not mini), connect the lead to the end of your hard-wire connector:

I just did this install a few hours ago. Successful install thanks to this write up. Thanks so much! What a great write up.
What i did different was i just electrical taped the ground that came with the V1 to the bolt, also i had to use a 2amp + 5 amp for the tap a fuse to get it to work. I used the 2nd fuse slot from the top on the column on the far left.
Now my V1 starts up when i start my engine.

If you do like projects on cars, this tool kit is indispensable IMHO:

And also a tab remover, looks like a flathead screwdriver with a forked end and an angle at the end.

need some help,
1) should i get the hard-wire with or without the low-fuse?
2) do i need the blade fuse tap or the mini blade fuse tap to connect to the fuse?

All you need is the hardwire cable that came with your V1 + a add a fuse like this one:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...S1HZR54KA9MHFV
The V! hardwire kit has a clamp thing that will bite into the wire of the add a fuse to establish the connection. That should do it. That is how i did it at least.
