DIY: Protection screen for intercooling radiator

After having paid $460 to have mine repaired about a year ago. I finally decided to add the protection. I can't understand why anyone would pay over $80 for OEM or plastic part from ECS. I did the wire screen and it was easy and covers the intercooler, radiator and A/C condenser. Took a little over an hr to do . BUT it would have been less. The dimensions (35"X 32") do not cover the entire IC. I measured it at 28"and cut the mesh 25"X 28". I had an inch or 2 extra to tuck in between the condense and radiator. I cut most of that away leaving about a 1/3 inch to tuck between the condenser and radiator. Should work as well or better than OEM or ECS part.

I'm not saying the OEM part is better than the DIY method, but if the radiator incurred damage with the OEM part installed, I think that would only help convince AoA/dealer to make the repair under warranty or a design defect argument.

I just picked up my 2013 and there's no protection either. I asked the service manager about it and he said he's only seen 1 car in years with damage. I better be safe than sorry I guess.

OK, but it is still plastic. That may work just fine.Any protection has got to be better than none.I wonder if anyone with either the Audi or DIY protection has needed to replace their intercooler.

Thanks guys for the DYI.. figured I was running on borrowed time, so today I picked up the OEM protector from the dealership. No wavy lines in the protector, quick and easy install. Worth the money for the peace of mind. Thanks all!
