Fuel Economy
 

I picked up my car in early December and have about 1,700 miles on it. My fuel economy has been in the 16-17 MPG range. Unfortunately (since this car really wants to be driven!), most of my driving is stop and go so I know it would go up with more highway but it still seems low. What economy are others seeing?

Can do better if you are patient
 

I have done close to 30 mpg on freeway at 70 mph and cruise on, warm day.
Also in rush hour I was able to do over 20 mpg by shifting not higher than 2000 rpm.

From the top of my head...

Cruising on the freeway I'm anywhere from 25-30mpg.

My average combined is is around 20mpg.

About 500 miles on the odo.

On a trip to SoCal on highway 5, I had an average speed of 74MPH and a fuel economy of 28.7MPG. Not bad, I think.

However, that's an unusually dull freeway to drive through the central valley of California. I do a lot of city driving and I've been getting less than 20MPG. Please take that with a grain of salt though, because I'm not always exactly pressing the pedal with fuel efficiency in mind. :)

I've heard that the on board computer can be a little overly forgiving with the numbers, I would encourage you to record mileage and do the math yourself after fillup - I am at about 1100 miles now and will fill up today for my 4th tank, each tank has been progressively better - I'll update this with my stats for all tanks, most of my driving is a pretty even 50/50 highway speeds and either city or stop/go on the highway (which can be worse than city).

Just curious, are you guys doing manual calculation? Or rely on the MMI to calculate the mpg? I find that the MMI is off by at least 1.5-2 mpg. I had mine VAG'd, and now it's almost dead on when compared to manual calculation.

With that said, my overall average now is about 18 mpg. The best one was 21.6 mpg, and the worst one was 14.5 mpg (that was because it included one 15-minute session on a race track).

- 25-26 mpg over 300 miles (250 miles at 80-85mph, 12 miles at 50mph, 12 miles of London city driving)

I've been running right around 20mpg in mixed driving (960miles on the clock). But I was playing around with the MMI the other day and turned oin the Shift Point indicator (Shifting for dummies?)

I was in steady traffic on a two lane so I followed the recommendations for a while. Obviously geared for maximum economy, it had me in 6th gear doing 40mph on a flat. Another time, after slowing to cross some RR tracks, it had me shift up into 5th while climbing a steep grade at about 35mph. The cool thing here was that this little torquemonster could SMOOTHLY continue to pull that grade at 1200 rpm. I was impressed.

That said, I've been hoping to get 23-25mpg in mixed driving and by adjusting shift points a little bit (at least when there is no room to play), I'm confident I'll be there.

Fueled up here is what my calcs look like for my DSG (hard numerical cald, not via MMI) -

24 miles - brand new with courtest full tank

232.5 miles, 11.115 gallons added to full: 18.7584MPG - never revved over 3.5K RPM

518.4 miles, 14.778 gallons added to full: 19.3463MPG - 3 runs over 5K RPM

806.6 miles, 15.401 gallons added to full: 18.7131MPG - numerous redline runs, 3 hard 0-60 runs in Dynamic (S) mode.

1101.0 miles, 14.981 gallons added to full: 19.6516MPG - spirited driving, avid use of paddle shifters.

just over 7k miles. If you are gentle you can get close to 30mpgs on freeway around 70mph. I normally see 21-22mpgs driving ~80% freeway doing closer to 80mph and spirited driving off freeway.

I need to lower the computer mpg calculation by about 1.5 mpgs based on my manual calculations.
