There are a few small issues that need to be addressed with the MMI. I know there are many threads on the actual issues. What I'm looking for is a way for me to find out if there are any new software updates. Are these updates covered by service? Or are they like Acura and Honda when you purchase the map upgrades you get the software updates as well?

Local dealer won't touch my MMI unless there are issues to address. Also, you are correct that only time you will get updates for sure is if you pay for map updates, which the MMI firmware is updated at that point in time. Dealer quoted me $450!!!!
