Default Navigation Updates

I have two different answers from two different dealers.

Does anyone know if the Maps can be updated by us, or if you have to take it to the dealer? I've been told that because it's a hard disk based system the dealer has to do it. I've also been told it's shipped on a disc.

The nav maps in my current car (335i) is on a disc which you order from Navteq or download from the net.

Same on the S4?

Navteq usually sends you a mailer letting you know when the updates are available and then you can buy them.

And they cost a bundle.

...what does it cost? I can convert from USD to CAD, but I'm not familiar with the conversion of 1 BUNDLE to CAD.

I believe the updates are around $200. I have an 06 and have not once ordered the Nav updates. Frankly, I don't think they're necessary unless you live in an area that is rapidly growing/changing (that would NOT be Northeast Ohio...)

Nor New Jersey.

I see no need for the update either. It doesn't introduce any new functionality to the Nav system, so unless you have a strong need to have the latest update in road changes I see little value.

For sure. In my case, the area of Toronto I live in has changed a lot in the 3 years I had my 335i. I've updated the disc twice. I moved to a new street a few months ago, and if I were keeping the car would have to update again, as my new street isn't in there yet.

The main problem is that Audi/Navteq still follow the OLD pricing model of $200 Nav updates. This doesn't work in today's times when you can for cheaper than that buy a standalone more capable standalone unit or even GPS software for your phone. A few years back it made sense when standalone GPS were $600+ but not now.

I'm in an area that's changed recently but having a hard time justifying $200 for that. I've already grown accustomed to what my nav knows and doesn't so I can easily work around it. Maybe if they drop the price.
