Default Purchase price (haggling)

To all of you who bought new or used, were you able to to haggle to get a better price than what the dealership was asking for? I know they hold their value very well, but being able to knock off a few $$$ is great.

I ask cause I'm about to pull the trigger and don't know how much I should fight for (ie. If it's such a great car you can't knock down the price too much.)

It really depends on the dealer. Generally you can haggle to a degree on a used car. But on a new car, some dealers will discount and others not. I can never get a decent deal with my closest Audi dealer. Don't even bother any more. But have been able to get decent deals with others . Generally, on a new car, you should be able to buy the car for $500-$1000 over dealer invoice. I would walk away from any dealer wanting more than that. BTW, I would start with a low number and see what they come back with. If there is no movement, leave. You may be surprised with a call back from the dealer after you leave. If not go elsewhere. But that may not be realistic with a used car.

I was actually able to purchase my 2014 S4 for $1,000 UNDER invoice. The reason is b/c of company loyalty; the parent company that owns the Audi dealership I bought my car from is the same parent of the Toyota dealership that my parents bought their car from just two weeks prior.

I knew the salesman personally so he made me an offer I couldn't refuse.

City, how many Audi dealerships do you have within a 50 mile radius from your home? 1 or many?

I bought a 5 month old avant, been looking for a while in the uk, and they seemed to fly like hot cakes. Out of the blue one of the dealers offered to reduce 2k off the price as I said it was a little above what I wanted to pay. I was quite surprised, and practically bit his hand off. Just shows it happens now and again, maybe catching them at the right time means they want to move cars occasionally. The previous few garages wouldn't budge on price as they said they would be ale to sell the car any way......
